    BOLENS STASH UPDATE

As Alan mentioned, Tom and I paid another visit to see Alan and John to collect Tom's lathe and a few other goodies. Much like previous trips we ended up bring back much more than we had intended to. Alan makes a great sales man. Chris kindly said he would bring along his 1886 and it made light work of moving the lathe on the trailer. So much so that we all had time for a rest and to take pictures of the magnificent 1886. These are the pictures I took After Chris had moved the trailer we all had a drive of the 1886. I managed to take a picture of Tom deep in thought, clearly contemplating selling those red tractors to put a Bolens into his life Fortunately no pictures of me It was a very long day and very late by the time we got home. Despite the late hour my wife was ready with very welcome refreshments before we started to unload. Today we moved Tom's lathe into position and my lad Joseph had a test drive with his new Saxon trailer It was great to see Alan, John, Chris and Philip, and many thanks to Alan, Chris and John for the help, and to Tom's dad for doing all the driving. Until next time.... Iain

    BOLENS STASH UPDATE

Thanks to our regular customers, John and I have cleared more of the Bolens Stash, although there were only a few Bolens related items leaving home this time. First off were a load of various rotavators. The second load of goodie's disappeared before I could take photo's. For some reason, this lathe took a lot longer to extract from the shed and load onto the trailer. Plenty of time for photo's though. We all thought Tom had killed the hoist when oil started running down the hose. Turned out to be a slightly loose banjo bolt. Would have caused MAJOR problems if the hose had split. Chris and his 1886 made light work of moving the lathe up to where the truck was parked. Just about to set off for pastures new after a long and tiring day. John and I would like to thank all involved for, once again, helping to clear more of his collection. Still lots more to go, but everything Bolens which we could find has now gone, apart from a little ride on mower. We can now see big holes which weren't there before. Still more holes to dig though. Alan.

    Archaeological Dig Site Pictures

I am working on a Archaeological dig site not far from my house, the artifacts we are recovering are 11,000 years of age. I found many arrow heads and tons of deer bone. This was a hunting camp several days trek from the village, The indigenous population from around 11,000 years ago used this rock shelter to hunt large game from then butcher it and drag it home after processing. One of the arrow heads I found was broken and was probably lodged in an animal that was cooked at the site from the heat marks on it. What is amazing is that arrow head was smaller than a dime. We process an area 50cm x 50cm and 5cm deep at a time recording measurements from a set point. Then we wash and separate the dirt and rock from the artifacts, chip stone, shell, and bone and bag it and catalog it. As you can see the water for washing must be pumped from a creek, it then goes 10 meters up a hill to a tank then we gravity feed it down a hose to a sprayer. The creek rarely has water so next week unless we can get someone to bring water to us we will be shut down. Sorry about some of the poor pictures I'm just getting used to this camera/phone/computer/mixer/can opener

    BOLENS STASH UPDATE

Another great adventure, it was a very long day and I'm sure all who were involved were feeling a bit tired today, well I was anyway! Many thanks to John and Alan once again for your great hospitality, it's always a pleasure talking and dealing with you. Also thanks to Chris for letting us use his Bolens to move the trailer about, it saved us a lot of work. Like Iain said, we always come away with much more than we were planning on but that's the great thing about visiting you guys, it's always worth while. I'm sure Alan's sales pitches are getting better every time too A massive thanks to Iain and my dad also who have helped make all this happen and get the lathe into it's new home today, I'm looking forward to getting it back to it's former glory. With Iain's previous experience of moving lathes I think we made it look easy loading it up, apart from a panic when the engine crane decided to spill a load of oil Unloading it was even easier though.. Thanks again to all who helped and no doubt I'll be returning Tom

This morning I attended the rally as a visitor to have a good mosey around. There were very few garden tractors on show except for a Simplicity and a Jacobsen. The rally was a very relaxed affair and had a good selection of vintage tractors, bikes, vehicles and oif course stationary engines. Spoke to a chap who created a replica Field Marshall tractor to scale. There was even a working steam fired thrashing engine working. A very enjoyable event and worth making the effort to attend. Here are some photos.

    Silloth Vintage Rally. Saturday.

The Lifeboat tractor is based on a County tractor fitted with a fully submersible casing about 1/4" thick capable of submerging to the top of the windows. It is based at Silloth and used for recovering the Solway Estuary Lifeboat. The tide goes out very fast leaving miles of mud flats .

    Can anyone identify this mower?

I found this photo courtesy of pmackellow of one of his Multigardeners and even though nothing in common about the deck the height adjuster is the same.

    Archaeological Dig Site Pictures

After we wet screen and wash each of the 20cm x 20cm x 5cm sections we pick out all the bone, tools, artifacts, chip stone, shell, etc, like I said, then these things are put into small baggies and labeled with the block and lot number as well as directional quadrant and level indicators that are mapped on the grid. I am in Lot 16 grid 15 and cleaned sections 55 through 61 today, that encompassed levels 105 and 106 in the NE, SE, SW, and NW quadrants of Lot 16. Each lot gets its own big bag the little bags go into. Then each bag is taken back to lab where it is rewashed and each separate material (bone, tool, chip stone, shell, artifact, etc.) is counted, weighed and measured, all this is listed into a log book and the numbers of how many tool, chip stone, bone, shell, and artifacts that are found in each section are then fed into a computer where it determines how much of the material was from the original layer and how much may have been transferred through natural or man ( or animal) made disturbances. The burnt bone is able to be dated so when we find younger bone mixed in with older bone and artifacts we know there was a transference of material between layers. The hope is that the computer can adjust for the anomalies of transference and give us data on when different civilizations used the site and for how long. I found another Arrow head today, everyone finds one everyday, but I also found lots of bone including the jaw bone of a rabbit with the teeth, Sorry to say I did not find the ears or tail.
