As some of you will know I am a collector of most things made by Tarpen Engineering of London These signs popped up on ebay and were secured for a sensible price They are original signs from the fifties owned by a chap that used to work for Tarpen, they have plenty of patina and will compliment any of my Tarpen displays exceedingly well Chuffed is an understatement...

Unfortunately it was the previous owner that had the mag rebuilt. Good news is that it started first pull of the handle from cold today and ditto when hot.Slow running is not perfect but I have just checked timing and it is a bit advanced so will back it off and see how that goes.

A little update today chaps the tank I have got is just a little too big so I have decided to modify it

I am extremely pleased and relieved to report that 137 has now had a maiden voyage up the drive, along the road and round the garden. Changing the mag to a later impulse Wico transformed it, started and ran second pull. Not without a glitch though reversed out of the garage 10 yards and it stopped , I thought here we go again, took the plug out expecting it to be fouled no it was fine, changed it anyway to a two terminal 18mm plug, set it up went to tickle the carb and it did not tickle, took the fuel cap off NO PETROL I have used a whole tank full ( 2 gallons ) just trying to get it started over the last ten days. Full tank of fuel and it started first time. I have refitted the air pipe and then the filter in stages to check for any change in running, no apparent effect so it looks as if Cinderella will go to the ball in malvern. I am annoyed with myself for persisting so long with the two original magnetos. I justify it in that I have tried so hard to restore it to as it would have been when it left the factory, I have rebuilt so many bits of scrap to as new rather than replace but there comes a point when common sense and my physical well being prevail over total originality. I will have the mags rebuilt when I can find someone who knows what they are doing. I have blisters on my right hand and muscles I never knew I had. But now it all seems worthwhile.

This is a late Christmas gift to myself

As I was working at home doing some odd jobs, I decided to have a look at this Hayter just a few minutes away from me. The old chap had it for years and until recently he had it at his property in Brittany. His father owned it prior to him. Also came with the original instructions manual. My plan was to use the engine on my Bolens Lawn Keeper but have decided against it as it seem a shame to dismantle it. It's currently has no sparks so I am hoping a clean of the points and armature will sort that out. My plan is to give it a thorough clean, service and treat with Owatrol. I got a small job in mind later this year to mow at a customer's. Anyone know where I can get an exhaust or silencer? Photos of the Hayter as found. I will take some more once it's serviced and cleaned up.

Hello All, As some of you will know I posted back earlier in 2015 saying that the cub cadet will have to sadly find a new home at the end of the year, well I know its the beginning of 2016 now but the time has come for me to part with this wonderful machine! It was restored by myself in 2013 so has the odd mark in the paintwork by now but after a good wash it shines up like new! its mechanically sound, starts, runs and drives lovely. You've all seen plenty of pictures of it by now and some of you have even seen it in the flesh, or shall I say tin however I shall upload more photos below. If anyone is interested send me a PM, we can have a chat. I'd rather it go to a good home on here than I would it go on eBay so thought I'd post this first! More pictures and info can be given if wanted. If wanted I will also include the transport box, tipping trailer and anything else I may come across.

Yes, those ones that exited through the deck have been obsolete for ages but the Briggs small "cigar" will do the job . A pattern one is available from Central Spares ; who also do a sponge air filter. http://www.centralspares.co.uk/product/muffler_23.aspx You may be able to recognise your air filter element from this, but beware that some have minor dimensional variations that are not obvious to a casual glance. I'd give either l&s engineers a call in Walsall or Midland Power and Machinery Distributors(MPMD) in Worcester. Otherwise I'd of thought any briggs dealer should be able to get one.

The original silencer was a circular box that exited through the hole in the deck. As far as I'm aware these are no longer avaliable but as Anglo traction says the std briggs one will fit and work.

Nice old 70s example there. It reminded me I have one at the stash in Billingshurst. Paint colour I believe is Fern Green. Next time I'm down there, I'll check it out as the cast alloy base and paint is in excellent nick. As for a Muffler, if it's a 3.5hp with 1/2" NPT thread, then a B&S 'Screw In' one should sort it (if you can get the old lock nut undone and the pipe out). Part number would be Briggs & Stratton 89966 .....type that into a search box for lots of buying options.

The Francis Barnett is a restored 1959 Falcon 81 with the Villiers 197 cc engine. That will be going in the spring. No photos of the Osprey at the moment as it is in bits and the wheels have gone off to be blasted. Engine 870402. Thanks for replies. I found one second hand Osprey on the internet, it is in a mower shop for over £600 with a three months warranty. Seems to have had a new coat of paint. ?

Hi. I have worked on a few B & S engines with no spark. I have never had to replace a coil, the blame always seems to be the HT Cap which are about £5. I know this is an old thread but I have only just joined as I have just bought an Osprey Type 61 like the one here. Regards Colin

Evening all another quick update , I've finally got the steering to as near as perfect as I can get it and u can steer it with one finger I haven got as much lock as the original tractor but not far off , I may still be able to obtain this with a few adjustments , I had a little drive on the tractor today in the work shop and every thing worked great so now I'm back to the fabrication part, because I'm thinking of putting a winch on the tractor I'm gonna put two 6volt batteries on wired in series to get my 12 volts I'm doing this for several reasons these batteries are very heavy so will act as good ballast , plenty of power and I have access to plenty of these batteries they have come out of a standby battery backup system they was 50 or so wired together to get mains voltage ,any way with me using two of these , I've made a battery Tray to mount them in under the seat !
