    Ohlsson & Rice: Cut-away Engine

I’ve been hoping for a long time I would find one of these and after months of constant searching I finally hit gold. Wish it had the cut-away gear box too but I’m thrilled just to have the engine. It needs a recoil spring and pull rope to complete it and of course a thorough cleaning. I’ll have to come up with a cool display stand as well. It’ll look cool with the recent brochure that also shows this engine.

Chip A Saw (Newer Style) rebuid

I can email some pics of the chip a saw decal with dimensions later today if that helps. Might have a print of one from usedtoolman which might be better to use for duplication but let me know. Depending on cost, I could use 3 decals for the older saw. It was stripped down but never painted

    Winter Project

As the sun was shining today I thought I’d paint the wheels and seats. First job was to make a jig to hold the wheels as it’s difficult to hold them up with hooks while painting, I’m really pleased with them and will leave for a few days to harden before fitting the tyres.

    O & R Carburetor operation

The diaphragm pumps fuel. The tank can be lower than the carb. This is my best guess. Pulse of the vacuum pressure from the case flexes the diaphragm to pump fuel and the amount of air flow past the jet pulls in the fuel. The needle valve meters the amount of fuel being taken. More air past the jet equals more suction which equals more fuel. More fuel and more air equals higher rpm. The amount of air is metered by the butterfly valve inside the carb body. The butterfly is metered by the governor vein. The governor vein is metered by air flow from the flywheel speed. There are also reed valves inside the engine which control the vacuum and positive pressure of the piston moving inside the case. It's all in the precise timing of the components. At full blast it all happens at 6300 times a minute or 105 times a second. The choke helps with starting to pull fuel with the vacuum from the case because you can't pull it fast enough for the air flow past the jet to do it. Same for the primer button, it's a bump for the fuel for starting only. But once that spark happens in the chamber with fuel in there, pow, things move quickly. Hope this helps.

    Gemini restoration

So far so good! The wheels I bought were fitted with needle roller bearings which I removed as the wheels needed to be fixed to the axle which provides the drive. With a centre diameter of 30mm and an axle diameter of 22mm I had to obtain some tubing to act as a bush. The O/D was just the right size but I had to ream out the I/D to fit over the axle shaft. Holes were then drilled to accept the cotter pins to secure them to the axle. Tomorrow, I’m going to weld the wheels to the tubing and continue finishing the wheelbarrow attachment.

Fix’em all, I like the look of the barrow attachment on yours. Had a quiet day at work today so I decided to start fabricating one for my Gemini.

I had a friend bend me a couple of seat springs pity he didn’t drill the square holes. so most of my time was spent drilling and filing. I’m going to load some photos back to front to see if they load in the right order. The red spring is the original off my Suburban used as a pattern.

Bill and Ben get some stick, gearstick that is. I did have two but can’t find one only a load of others all the wrong shape so out with the heat and re-bend one. Now they are happy, both have a stick. The one on the left is the original. Why do my photos load in the wrong order ?

    Winter Project

Got the new panels all fitted and bolted up tight today and the lift mechanism fitted. One cover I haven’t cleaned as it had a Mountfield ID plate on it from new and still has the shade of red i need to match. I’m pleased with the look and the belt guard fits as well.

    Winter Project

Not much progress this week as I’ve been busy with other stuff but here’s the latest. Ive made the belt guard clips and welded them on, Ive made 2 supports for the deck lift thingy and cleaned a few more bits up. Hopefully all the panels are finished and i can get them fitted on both tractors.

    Winter Project

Here’s the photos of progress so far, One tool tray needs welding and the slot for the seat spring but it’s all bent ready, the other thing I noticed the side panels need little tags welded on to secure the belt guard ( bugger ) lucky I hadn’t primered them. I’ve cut the old ones off the old panel. A job for tomorrow if I get time.
