    HALF a HORSE.

Two little bits this time. The carburetor attachment tube was cut down to about 1/2 length. Left long, the throttle cable was rubbing on the outside of the hood and didn't look good anyway. Cut down, the cable and it's outer spring fitted neatly inside the hood. I expected difficulty cutting the tube down due to the limited room for the hacksaw, but it was a quick and easy job. The tube was softer than thought and a junior hacksaw soon went through it taking care not to mark the paint on the surrounding body panels. The cable is just tucked in out of the way at this stage. The brake pedal, non working, was made up from alloy, steel washers and plastic. The lettering is 1 mm approx round plastic rod with the curves of the B and R from solder wire. The solder wire was super glued in place with the remainder of the lettering and other parts fused together with liquid plastic cement. The washers, either side of the pivot point, were drilled and tapped then held together with 8BA c/sunk bolts passing through the assembly. The center of the washers, and the plastic/alloy in between, were tapped 5/16 UNF for a mounting bolt which was fixed in place with lock tight. This item was just eyeballed up from various photo's so just a near enough copy. The last photo shows it loosely fixed in place and still waiting final filling and painting.

    The Showmans new Toy

Back last summer while I was at a mates barn having a rummage, right at the back in the darkness I found a red tractor that ive never seen before. After a bit of research I found that it was built by Toro for one year and because of poor sales was dropped. The dealer had 10 and offered them at a deal and my mate bought 3. Two were used for a contract that he had then parked up and the third is still new and not assembled. The one I have bought is a Toro GMT 230 1978, It has a Kohler 23 hp engine, hydraulic deck lift and bends in the middle. It was parked up in the barn in the late 90s after doing 170 hours work and left until I spotted it. After fitting a makeshift fuel tank and a good battery it fired straight up with everything working. Have to say i'm chuffed to bits with it and sounds really nice, awesome thing to drive

    Wheel Horse RJ-58 Restoration

Long overdue update. now that all of the rot and rust had been removed and repaired the next job was making the hood smooth enough to get a nice finish. Lots of time and filler has been used so far to get a nice smooth finish, heres some photos.

    HALF a HORSE.

Already thinking about this Iajn. Thanks. Have some parts roughed out. Measurements guesstimated from photo's like the other pedal but correct sizes etc would be better. No rush though as working on other parts just now. Would a roll of wallpaper be long enough. ? Thought ! If I used a roll of lining paper I could write on both sides.

    Turbair Sprayer

All the pictures I have seen of various Turbair sprayers have the idle screw (with the spring missing) tightened all the way up jamming the governor as I mentioned before. I did question the missing spring when this latest one arrived, but it isn't used on the Turbair as far as I can tell. *Note the following does not apply for the Turbair engine; Normally the carb idle stop screw (fitted with a spring) is used to adjust the idling speed, the lower holes below that are used for a throttle cable (held with a clip) on tools/applications that use a remote throttle control, eg. the bike kit or outboard motor. That is an absolutely fantastic tractor, I love it. It hard to imagine that they were not a good seller as it looks perfect for cutting large areas of grass. Great find. It has the same engine as my main grass cutting tractor and I budget for one gallon of petrol per acre. Those engines do run hot and can suffer from head gasket problems. I now regularly remove the tin around the heads, blow out any debris and re-torque the heads. Not had any problems since.

    Wheel Horse RJ-58 Restoration

A few more bits cleaned up, filled and painted. One of the next jobs was to tackle the rusty hood. New piece ready to weld in. The bottom of the hood was in the worst condition, the hole in the middle is only meant to be 5/16" A new piece shaped New tank straps, made from part of the original Got the wheels painted too

    Wheel Horse RJ-58 Restoration

I tackled the fuel tank next which is a small size so harder to find. As you can see the tank was gunked up, nothing was working to clean it so the only option to salvage it was to unsolder it and clean it properly. In two halves. Immaculate now, ready to solder both halves back together, I also found some small pin prick holes which needed fixing. I thought i'd try using silver solder for the first time, I had to get it red hot in order for the flux and solder to do its job, the solder flowed into the overlap perfectly so i'm happy that its sealed properly. The cap had a tab missing so I fabricated a new one and soldered it on, Has anyone got an idea about what the seal would've been like and where I can buy one? Plenty of stainless bought for the reassembly. The original axle seals were missing and you can still buy them at $20 a piece, that wasn't going to happen so I turned some steel tube down to the correct dimensions and bough some seals to push into them. They fit snugly over the axle so hopefully they'll work
