    East Sussex Horticultural Play Day

Back home now from an enjoyable day at the East Sussex Horticultural Play Day at Chiddingly A variety of pedestrian machines from Farmers Boy and Colwood to Iron Horse and Auto-Culto, together with our International Cub Cadet 128 and two Wheelhorses (and the newly restored and very nice trailer) from The Showmans stable had a go in the rather solid clay ground with varying degrees of success Catering was handled by Wendy my dear wife (when she wasn't flying round on the Cub Cadet - it is her tractor after all) and I think all present had a fun day, this could well turn into an annual event . Here's some photos...

    Wot? No L plates?

Number one grandson's fiancé got left we us for the afternoon. She showed great interest in the tractors. She doesn't drive, so some instruction on driving was done. Someone else had to get into the act.

    Ransomes Sand Skimming Tractor

Taken engine off and washed down the engine bay, sand filled a 25L container! Input flange bearing is shot and engine bay floor looks like it has been dropped to accommodate Kohler engine.

    Ransomes Sand Skimming Tractor

Thought I better start my own thread regarding the Skimmer. Skimmer SN is 15200 which makes manufacture around about 1965, traced reg number through DVLA hasent revealed much. Main aim is to get it mechanically operational, needs some new steel welding in, mainly sheet metal parts on the top frame where seat is, and engine changed to original Ransomes 600cc. Good thing is it is all there, front auger and conveyor drive roller is free. Its not done much since it was retired as still full of sand, needs a good power wash to flush it all out of engine bay. First job is to free tracks up, get engine off and free up the controls and gear lever. I will get cracking next week but progress is likely to be slow as its being stored 25 miles away while I get the new workshop up.

    Titch' shed(s)

A lot of you will know of my past 'shed' builds...nee telegraph poles etc...but where we are at now has these ready built fortunately.. Mind you, still got some more returning and illegal security systems to fine tune, but I swear I will never 'build' a big shed again...getting a bit much for me.. ..bless...

    Well, it's old and mechanical!

Not strictly Horticultural or Garden but am looking for information about the manufacturer etc of this push / pull child's rider which was new to me in 1947. Its done the rounds of other children and grandchildren etc and is now back with me for refurbishment! The maker's name stamped in the back is BHC Boltoy but I can't find any reference to them on the internet and unfortunately the possible local source, the Pedal Car Museum, just across the boarder in East Sussex, has closed.

    Project Raider 10.

Split the gearbox this morning. Not a pretty sight. A good layer of black sludge in the bottom. Gears and drive shafts covered in a layer of rust. Main bearings rough. I did manage to free the selectors and get three gears. So I reckon it's a total rebuild, with my metric conversion like the C-121. Not going to happen methinks. A visit to a friend today has produce some interesting parts, that with another engine I have, will make a fun special.

    Well, it's old and mechanical!

The new tyres arrived from the Pram Museum in Holland this morning and having been warmed up on top of the Aga were fitted with a bit of a struggle as they are a really good tight fit and no levers used so as not to scratch the newly powder coated wheels. The chassis has been blasted and powder coated so reassembly can begin as soon as the bench is clear. Still on the look out for a miniature tractor seat in either metal or plastic but it looks as though I will have to make a wood former and build one up from fibre glass matt with some wire mesh reinforcement - all alternative suggestions welcome.

Not much done lately due to having lots of school work to do, here is a little update. The wheels are all finished now. You can just about see in this photo that a previous owner wanted to put a larger sized battery on the dash tower and so they had taken a hammer to one of the sides to break the spot weld so we set to work on replacing this piece. This was the first piece to get replaced, the holes are where it was spot welded before. Here is the replacement piece This is the replacement side piece that we made. The screws that held the tail light on had no head left so I drilled them out. Luckily it came off and the original bulb still worked. Lots of new stainless steel bolts and washers have been bought ready for the reassembly

    Titch' shed(s)

Ha, or is it more trendy to say lol? no, I'll stick with Ha! Yes, decent buildings , Nissen hut was in a poor state on each gable, but now timbered up and tidier. Cleaned out, almost, ready for log storage and ride on's. The brick one is the old milking parlour and is a decent size, just about there with it now..other end has doors Chris, the bricked up end is by the back of the house...but, could of course be changed... ...no, it's fine as it is. My Lad put my electric supply in recently, so chuffed with it really... at least my President has a choice of bedrooms!!

    Titch' shed(s)

Well, brick one, ex miking shed, houses our daily used motors, w/shop area and my President at the moment, oh, plus stacks of .....useable offcuts of various materials.. The Nissen hut, don't mention going through the roof!! , is more garden kit and log storage, well, plus a few ride on's..Good building now though, doors one end, (new by Titch Joinery???) house end, seen here, I've yet to do the windows, is kinda just being made a bit 'nicer' than it was. Hence, no time at the moment other than work and doing my sheds!! Oh, sorry dear, and your plants etc!!! Just need some pennies for tractors!!

A little bit more done over the weekend, I have now fastened on the brake, clutch and linkages onto the tractor so that I can finish painting it together. A new front axle pin was made and we used stainless steel grub screws instead of a roll pin which was used before. Heres a photo once it had all had some more paint.
