Hayter rough cutters

Hi all I'm new to the group I've just rediscovered my interest in older rotary mowers I used to tinker with them 25+ years ago ive recently bought a couple of hayterettes a Hayter 21 and an Osprey to play with hopefully I can help someone on here one day and might even need a bit of help myself at some point im not planning to restore the machines not work them as they were intended currently from the 4 I bought as none runners I've got the 5hp hayterette working like a dream and the 21 running and driving. The 21 needs servicing and welding The osprey is part stripped as bought but needs clutch work and a new drive chain with a tiny patch of welding once I have put the coil point etc back on and got it running the 3 hp hayterette is being naughty and sheared 3 flywheel woodruff keys for no obvious reason i did discover the blade disk was loose though and suspect kick back and the inertia of the loose disk to be the issue will look at that when I get chance i do have another 5hp engine I can fit if it decides to carry on being silly though it is a more modern engine that just needs its float valve seat replacing and it should be a good motor John -

Cutting up some metal today with the 9" disc cutter and had my foot in the wrong place. It got very hot very quickly and I ended up doing the oakie cokie round the shed. -

1 pointI learned that a rotavator is not just the English word for rototiller, the way it works, no wonder it was such a hit. I think many rototillers are called rotavators when they aren't one.
-
1 pointArthur Clifford Howard started in Australia, ( I do have the dates somewhere) then in the 1930,s moved to the uk and set up Rotary Hoes Ltd with a Captian Griffiths. The Australian company kept going I believe as a separate concern. In the 1960,s Howard bought out the manufacturer of Clifford and for a short time the company was called Howard-Clifford. Then the name reverted back to Howard Rotavators. In 1985 the company went into receivership. The most famous rotavator the gem stayed in production by Dowdeswell as the 650 until 1997.

1 pointThinking about it, I think Iain done some research on Howard. I will ask him when I meet him at RPT.

-
1 pointOkay, so after doing some research on the internet I'm still confused. Much of what I read says that Howard was an Australian company, no mention of the UK, what gives? Reading the link Dave posted, seemed to help, I gather Howard is more than one company.

Here's some info on them. You will need to scroll down a bit to get to the Rotavator folks. http://tractors.wikia.com/wiki/Howard -
1 pointLook good Chris. Heavy is good also. But before you get carried away and start drilling holes, the bottom edge of wear strip needs to be 3/8" to 1/2" below the bottom edge of the blade.

The only way he'll get abandoned is if he wonders off into the wilderness, never to be seen again. -
1 pointNorm. If Chris abandons you on your visit to John's, and leaves you to find your own way back, you will know the friendship has ended.
-
1 pointThe strip along the bottom will serve two purposes. Primarily for me, it will act as a wear strip, with the option of fitting a rubber strip if used on concrete/tarmac etc. It could be a laugh or the end of a friendship.

Steel ordered today for the blades, 48" x 7" x 7.5 mm, and my mate's going to roll it too, also asked him for 2 small strips to go along the bottom edge to hold the rubber on. After Rural past times Norm and I will be making 2 graderblades to take to Biddenden tractorfest, its going to be a joint build so should be a laugh just hope we can do it in time -
