Wow Chris, that Bolens 600 looks fantastic and is in really good condition. The best bit is that it looks 100% complete and I could not spot any missing parts. Looking at ID plate it looks like a 181-04 which would make it 1964 and one of the last batch of 600's. If I have read it incorrectly this is the details for all of the 181 models: 1962 - 181-01 & 181-02 1963 - 181-03 1964 - 181-04 181 signifies that it is electric start, it would be a 180 if it was manual start. This is the parts manual for a 181-04, I have the parts manuals for the other models if it turns out not to be an 04 600 180-04 181-04 - Parts Manual.pdf This is the owners manual 600-800-900 - Owners Manual.pdf My Bolens buddies and others have commented about colours however here is the 1964 sales brochure which should help 58131-Bolens 1964 Brochure.pdf As a suggestion, I would put the wheel weights back on and try ploughing with the Bolens. If think you may have misheard Alan. I am sure he would have said he that he has found a lovely Bolens which needs to come to Norfolk. I'll wait for the call Iain

    Lug Nuts & Wheel Weights

One of my first chores, after the rider is runnin', changing from wheel "bolts" to "lug nuts." Although we have cast wheel weights, made some using discarded brake drums. Weld bolts in the drums, then fill with concrete.

Another update on this one....... I needed to refit the clamp to secure the rotor cover to the drive tube, make a support bracket from the fuel tank down to the air cleaner and then make a new throttle cable. I also ordered some 4mm rubber sheet to make the soil/stone deflector...... Also wanted to say it runs too!!! Not exactly sure what I did, but I just went through everything again from the seals, to the timing, to the carb...... All seemed fine though, so when I added fuel again, and pulled the starter I wondered if it would ever start......? But it did on the 3rd pull..... Here's a little video of it running And here's a photo of the almost finished machine..... I say almost, It's decided to leak a small amount of oil from the seal around the shaft with the blades on, new ones will be collected tomorrow!

Thanks for all the details you've posted, all very helpful to a " newbie ". the idea is to get it up and running properly and then make a hitch for the plough

Ordered up some 4mm rubber sheet to remake the soil flap at the rear of the rotor cover. Once cut and fitted, I placed the cover back on the machine....

I went up to a friends place on Saturday not 20 miles from here to collect a set of rear wheel weights and while i was there i saw the little tractor they came off. It was hiding in a dark container looking all forlorn to be losing part of its rearend so a deal was struck and it was loaded in my van. Its in good condition and will enjoy its new home with the Horses. Heres a few photos for you to look at and i need a new coil if anyone has one.

I believe Dave (OldBuzzard) posted the sleeve hitch plans in the download section of this forum. These plans were created by a very good friend of mine in America, Michael. Iain

    Wheel weights

Picked up a couple of rear wheel weights from a friend, they are about 50 lbs each and should help with traction, just got to clean them up and paint them but very pleased with them

    Lug Nuts & Wheel Weights

Two ideas I like there, Art. I've a lot of scrap lead. All I need are the discs.

    Wheelhorse signs

Not quite a ride on , but I have put this in the ride on section as there isn't really a relevant section for signs. I was having a few signs made up recently for the house and was so impressed this young guys work that I wondered if he would make me a few Wheelhorse logo signs , I picked them up yesterday and was delighted at how they came out . One of them has been polished to a mirror finish & the other has been brushed steel affect . They were made out of 4 mm stainless steel to are very strong and naturally will not rust . I am that impressed with them I am going to make one of them a clock and am also having others made up into clocks . let me know what you chaps think. Anyone that may be interested in a clock I will show you the finished product soon and if your interested you can let me know . As you can imagine , the steel is the thick grade quality and stainless isn't cheep so the clocks won't be a £10 cheapy . These particular signs are about 3 ft in length

Having seen it today in the flesh, or metal, I can say that it is in very good condition. Chris did say though that he was going to start collecting Bolens so that they don't all end up in Norfolk.
