Bolens 600 up and running
Alan and one other reacted to Triumph66 for a post in a topic
At last I got around to sorting out the 600 which I bought from the States. Ohio to be precise. I replaced the fuel sediment bowl as it was missing the screw. I checked the plug and it was clean and turned it over and then it fired up happily. I let it ran for a wee while to warm it up. I then selected the gears. Nothing happened. Then I remembered I needed to put the cotter pin back in. I gave it a quick run in 1 and 2 and reverse. It was surprisingly nippy and managed to ride over the wood chips fairly easily. I decided to drain the transmission oil and engine oil which I duly did and replaced it with fresh oil suitable for the engine and the transmission. I gave it another run (in fact three runs) around the yard and track. I finally went into third gear and that was really nippy. I them decided enough was enough and put it into neutral and tried to engage another gear. Nothing happened at all. I looked at the belts which were slipping and noticed that one was off the pulleys. I managed to get it back on but still couldn't select a gear. The clutch pedal was down onto the floor and wouldn't come back up. I pushed it back to my storage marvelling at how quiet these 600 are.... i think a new new set of belts are in the cards. -
1 pointLast year I made a couple of display stands. Simple T design, similar to ones made by The Showman. These just press into the ground and information board mounted across the top. At the HVC rally at Carlisle airport on the coming weekend, the entries are mainly on hard standing. Thinking drilling holes in the runway wouldn't go down well, I had a root around and found a pair of plastic wheels and some scrap ply board. Screwed each wheel to a piece of board, then a splash of paint and viola the result below. The stand spikes are a good push fit in the wheel centres. Still not very stable in breezy/windy conditions and the airfield is certainly breezy. I have in my store shed a large jar of lead shot, left over from when I reloaded shotgun cartridges. Tomorrow the wheels will be filled with shot. That should stop them blowing over.

By the look of the image your machine has points ignition, no trigger module between the left leg of the coil armature and the coil itself. Plug caps. Comments have been made about these being the likely cause of failure. This is only likely to be the case if the original BS connector has been removed and replaced with an aftermarket cap. Again, from your image you appear to have the original connector and there's not a lot that can go wrong with those. Sometimes they have a simple rubber boot. The only exterior things left to check is the kill switch on the throttle plate or the kill wire that goes to it. If all is OK there, you have a choice, either remove the flywheel and examine the points etc , or find a later BS Magnetron coil ( with suitable leg spacing) and fit that in place of yours - a ten minute job and a direct replacement using your existing flywheel without the need to remove it. Personally I would do the latter as they are 99.9% reliable and obviate the need to ever remove the flywheel again. -

Hello Riber3, welcome to the Forum. Firstly, you can test the Armature/Coil using the advice on the B&S site- -LINK- . As far as I'm aware, the HT Lead is fixed to the Coil and sold as a complete unit. Part number for the Armature on your engine is 298968 and are about UK£33.00. for a genuine replacement. Other things to check are the 'Kill' or 'Ignition Ground/Earth Wire' and setting. The linkage may not be isolating this when the Throttle Lever is moved to start position. Some people have converted to a Transitorised Electronic Ignition system to replace the old system, where I'm sure someone on here would assist you with what is needed. If you prefer to stay with the original system, then it is also possible the Condenser may be faulty. As for Manuals etc for your engine model, if you click on this link, it will take you directly to B&S site's manuals for it. - B&S 170700 . Hope this helps. Regards -

Just when we thought we'd found all the goodies this was unearthed. Its a right angle drive but has a shaft out of each slde that drive the same rotation, handy for a 4x4 project -
1 pointAs of this morning the wheels contain 3lbs of lead shot. Nice and stable now.

Got a bit more done today. As i use the auto caulto plough with good results I decided to make the hitch adaptable to take most of my attachments. i got a length of channel bent up and drilled some holes, its held on with 2 nuts. ive also welded the tube on to make more like a clevis. heres some photos -

Lathe fun
Ian reacted to Anglo Traction for a post in a topic
Good progress Ian, like the Suds Pump Setup. As for the Motor, like Norm says, it's a very reliable brand, but pretty powerful for your needs. I just checked the Start and Run Current draw for it, which will be in the region of 33 Amps and 16 Amps respectively!!. If your supply Amperage is questionable i.e 20 Amp Ring Main, then you may well find it tripping out on start up?. For your Lathe size a 1.5 Hp motor would be more than adequate and more economical to run with minimal risk of tripping drawing roughly 20 Amp Start and 10 Amp Run. But I'm no expert and I'm sure there are some on here to tell you otherwise if I'm wrong. My Myford runs with a Single Phase 1 Hp GE Dixon Motor bough new in '86' which never struggles and merely sips the amps . Keep up the good progress, I'm still in watch mode at the Mo', but will start working on the practical soon hopefully. Regards -
