    working the horses...and kids

We had a nice day yesterday after a few weeks of rain and decided to pull out and chop one of the Birch trees that had fallen in the gill (creek). Bendy was on duty for heavy pulling and the little ranger on tow duty. I did have to have a quick test of articulation on C4 first - just to test first pull

    Ransomes Digger

For some time I have had problems with a neighbors drain that crosses our land and so I have decided to intercept it and put in a manhole for rodding access. Good job for the digger so out it came nice hot sunny day, dug the trench, found the drains ( my wife is a dowser ) using two bits of fence wire, spot on location. made the trench much bigger for the manhole and then thought I would go back to the other end of the trench and clean it out ready to lay the pipe. I managed to straddle the trench without a problem until I came to a bit where the wall collapsed under me and pulled the track off the drive sprocket. Ho Hum! serves me right for being over ambitious, now I need to get some more crawlers out as a recovery team!

    International Cadet 85 riding mower

Yes, another new tractor !! Collected today from Hampshire it's a 1979 International Cadet 85 riding mower, currently in a fetching (?) shade of purple, this will be changed to the correct white livery in due course Battery was knackered so not had it running yet, new battery on order Seems all there apart from the wrong seat, thanks to Mr Showmans eagle eyes at the Festival of Transport last weekend I do have the correct seat in stock Deck seems reasonably sound, weighs a ton like they do !! 8hp B&S in it, dates according to the lists I have to 1979 so quite a late one in IH terms Here's some photos, we took the seat off to get it home hence why it is not in place in the early photos

]It's now got new throttle and clutch cables and a pair of new handlebar grips, courtesy of www.merrytiller.co.uk, top class service! I've just got to clean the tank and carburettor out and away we'll go. Took it to the Brinkworth Show on Sunday with my others. I've been promised a Vee-plex pulley and this one will take it because it's not got a reverse gear....

    A Simple Lathe Indexing Job

I take no credit for the ingenuity of the attachment, as it was conceived more than half a century ago by renowned Model Engineers in this form . I just adapted it to my use/machine and so posting it on here, it will inspire others to apply a principle to fit their needs. Reckon looking back into the past can solve many problems we come across, as probably like for example Norm's Dad and mine, a lot can disappear with them .

    A Simple Lathe Indexing Job

Bit limited until I get the new Glasses, but I decided to make a Classic/Vintage looking replacement Spark Plug Screw Cap. Regretfully, I had to make it to fit a modern Metric threaded Plug . I made an Indexing tool a long time ago that allowed me to make and Mark Out a lot of parts for my Traction Engine. It just bolts onto the Change Wheel Quadrant (Myford ML7) and a Mandrel that fits/locks into the end of the Spindle to carry any number toothed Change Wheel. For this job. I only needed to use the 25 toothed Spindle Driven Gear (removed the Tumbler Reverse selector Lever and Stud)- Stub of 1/2" dia Brass turned down to shape, drilled and tapped M4 . I used a 60 deg pointed lathe tool on it's side set on the C/Line and proceeded to manually pass the Tool across the face taking small light cuts to 20thou deep, then turned and locked the Lathe Spindle with the pointed screw in the next tooth groove and repeated. In progress and prior to Parting Off from the Stub- . The result is a nice clean grooved rim to grip with the fingers for tightening on the Spark Plug. I do have Knurling Wheels so I can make a Clamp type Knurling Tool, but preferred the straight grooves for this job. I'll make a BA Threaded one as well for when I find a good genuine vintage Lodge CB3 Plug for the Villiers.

    Front weight.

Yesterday I picked up a weight of a mate. So as I'd not much on today and a bit bored I cobbled together a mount for it. Took one front mule bracket and some other bits and knocked up this. Which with the weight on looks like this.

Nigel left early and missed the vintage tractor road run, it was over 2 hours through the fields and country lanes, 16 tractors many with trailers full of people all the different sounds of old machinery was very good. When we got back to the show the club organised a big BBQ which was very nice, lots of good food and good company

    wheelhorse coloured green

Hi I have recently acquired a raider 10 1975 and someone recently hand painted it red. Now looking at it in the places where he didn't to paint under bonnet and all the fiddly places it's in like a JD green it's old paint but excellent finish one coat .Also little things like spring fasteners for self tapping screws are like new and green my question is did wheelhorse spray some different colours for contracts because someone has gone to a lot work along time ago for a colour change Regards

Hate to say it, in the USMC we say, "Green is to show the world we're mean." I prefer, "Red is for the blood we shed." Oh, "deere" me.
