Bolens H16
minky and 3 others reacted to Triumph66 for a post in a topic
Whilst idly browsing through Gumtree UK, I came across this H16 titled Garden Tractor. It's an hour away from me in Cornwall, just across the border. After a phone call I did quick trip to Cornwall to view the GT. The seller, an elderly but sprightly gentleman, recovering from a triple heart transplant, owned it for 25 years. He was the second owner. The previous owner traded it in for a newer machine in Exeter, Devon. He used it to mow his paddock which was grazed by donkeys. A deal was struck. His wife made me a cup of tea and made a lovely cheese sandwich with pickle. A lovely couple who lived there coming on 50 years. I asked him to write up some amusing antidotes about using the H16. It developed a starting fault some 10 years ago. He then bought a Toro which he said "isn't a patch on the old Bolens". He showed me a few other horticultural equipment that he given me first refusal. I also got the original receipt for the H16 when he bought it. He was pleased and thrilled that I am a Bolens enthusiast and that it would be looked after. I told him that I got 7 Bolens all together. That's when he invited me to have a cup of tea! I then told him that I knew several UK Bolens owners who got this particular model and that it was highly rated. That was when the sandwich was made! He told me that he was considering repowering it with a Honda engine but he couldn't bear the thought of 'ripping out the heart of the old girl'. Can anyone tell me a but more about this H16 which is a 1656-01 # 0183284? (difficult to read the numbers). I believe it's a '73 model? It's all there and the surface is just surface rust but all original.the rear wheels are off his Toro whilst his Toro got the Bolens wheels as they are shored with Agri tyres. They will be swapped over when it's collected. -

Nice to see Chris again today. After staying away he came back for another play and had a great day. OK, I'm not the best poet. After an earlier than usual cuppa, we decided to drag two of John's Marina's from out from the barn lean to, their home for the last ten years. As the ground was still wet and muddy, plus an upward incline to contend with, the digger was used which gave Chris the chance to perfect his lever twiddling skills. He's getting good at this and is trying to think of a way to tell Pam that he needs a digger as a playmate for his horses. The first car out was the estate which was towed around to John's garage so that it's soon to be new owner could work on it in comfort. A few bits had been removed from the engine. Eagle eyed viewers might spot a well known red van in the background. The difficult part was getting the car up and over the step at the garage entrance. Bits of wood as a ramp didn't help much, combined with rough ground, sticking brakes and not enough muscle power. A rethink was needed and the end result caused Chris to say "That's the first time I've got a car into a garage through a window". How ? Various ropes and chains from the car, across the garage, through a window at the rear of the garage, then attached to the digger. Problem solved. The second car was a lot easier. Not so far to go this time. The digger to start with, then pulled / pushed into the shed. This one could have been driven if a suitable battery had been available. Rounded off the day by loading the Sprinter with wood for Chris's fire plus a final cuppa. Got to keep the old boy warm. -

As a few of you will have read i came home from Johns yesterday with a sprinter load of wood. As I've been poorly for a couple of weeks and having a polythene sheet for a roof my wood stock had gone down dramatically so as it was a wet day i thought I'd cut it up -

Good photos Alan, it was a job that we've been talking about for a while. The red car i had running a few weeks ago that ran very well and on the fuel that was in it !!!. Its only got 17 k on the speedo but i dont know if thats right. In all a very constructive day with plenty of tea and good banter. Thanks to John and Alan for an enjoyable day -

They look spot on glad you got there in the end, I think part of the problem here was the original photos you put on eBay it caused bit of consern and the change in the price so many times, I do understand pricing can be hard pre production, but now members have seen them in the flesh ime sure every one wishes you well, good luck in the future -

Bolens 1050
Joseph and one other reacted to Triumph66 for a post in a topic
Well it arrived at lunch time today. Luckily I was working locally so when I got his text I rushed back to my house. We unloaded the 1050 together and I could not believe it that when I turned the key, it fired up straight away. I let it ran for about a minute. It was smokey from the exhaust but I think a good service will cure that or if not, some new rings. A good grease up and clean I think will make it look even better. I need a new tyre or inner tube for the front. One of the headlights worked and I was once again struck how solid the Bolens is. The courier, a mate of the seller, was absolutely taken with the Bolens. As far as I could tell, all the levers worked but I will need a need a throttle cable at some point. i think it's very a working tractor that have been maintained to a point, -
1 pointA guy had them at a swap meet I was passing by, I gave 10.00 for both
-
1 pointPicked up these today. Any one guess what they are? And hopefully what one at least will be?

I forgot to look for white bits, I found some red bits but they had royal mail stamped on them -
1 pointGreat find Andrew. I believe the first production run of the H16 was only 1973. Then for some reason Bolens made the H14 and not the H16 in 1974 and 1975 before the 2nd and 3rd production of the H16 in 1976, followed by the 4th in 1977. The early ones like yours were the best. I have four H16's and love them. Iain
-
1 pointThe H16 are highly regarded and that was a very lucky find I can tell you. I passed one up last year because I ditherered.
-
1 pointNice find really jealous would love one of those

1 pointAlain, are these ploughs for Bolens pedestrian tractors or for actual garden tractors? I had the impression that Bolens did not make them for GTs? Anyway, whatever, you got them for a good price.

1 pointWould u sell one with no brackets so I can weld my own on to suit my loader?
-
1 pointI think 35kg/77lb would be more than enough for me. I'd have to start doing press ups. What weight are standard Wheel Horse weights? Anyone know?
-
1 pointLooks well, Adrian. Hopefully all misunderstanding is cleared up now. You say your making wheel weights. I would be interested in a pair for my wheel Horses.
-
1 pointWell done to you all. I've got a couple of forms for Tam, for the HVC ploughing match near Carlisle. No mention of horticultural on them, but I hope to sort that out tonight. I'll give him a call tomorrow. Going to take my C121 anyway. Just wish I had wheel weights.
-
1 pointright i have just come of a phonecall to flow fit and managed to get a supply of hydraulic components at a better price this has allowed me to reduce the cost of the loader by £100 this saving has been passed on to the loaders so they are now for sale at £1650 ive tried umpteen suppliers and they cant touch these prices i have so this is now the final price and as your all aware now my workshop is fully operational. if any of you are local to me you can call at my workshop and have a go on my wheelhorse loader for yourself, im hoping to have a video made tomorrow i was going to do it today but its raining and i dont want to get my tractor wet and dirty.

1 pointI just noticed the cable snagged under under the pedal. 2nd photo. Been out and sure enough, it was preventing the lift from going higher. So perhaps not the weight of the tractor after all and I've not knackered it. .
-
1 pointGot everything free(ish) and a sheet of 5/8" ply, that been propping up the workshop wall for some time, temporarily fitted to the top. Found out it will not go down unless weight is on. It is hydraulic with foot pedal and very slow. I had to test it of course, before going any further. Max weight 185kg it says on the side. Think there's a tad more on there. But it never budged. It won't lift over 20" high now, but that will do me nicely. It will most likely stay at that hight as well. No need really to lift it up and down. More to do yet. But may be a while.

1 pointPictures are absolutely misleading. Its kind of like those glamour or boudoir photos, or the ones the estate agents hand out that are retouched. Well I bid on an air compressor at this auction site because the compressor was only a 100 miles away and I was going that way. It seemed like a nice portable shop air compressor, one of the older generation that really lasts, well in the picture it was next to some electric motors that I thought were 1-2 hp motors, upon arriving at the auction site the electric motors turned out to be the size of a cow and so did the "date" I had won on auction for 150.00, and at nearly 300kg that works out to 2kg to the dollar. Apparently it has a 5 hp 220 volt motor with a tank that could power the Queen Mary for a jaunt in the harbor. They loaded it in the van with a crane, had to take the front skids loose to lower it enough to pass into the cargo area, it was 51 inches tall, I managed to get some smooth 2x12 wood ramps to the back of the van and pull it rear ward with a come along until I could slide it down the ramps enough to reattach the front two skids, then pulled it to the end of the ramps and lifted one end (it wasn't the light end, there wasn't a light end) onto a heavy duty dolly and danced a jig getting her centered on the dolly. From now on I'm sticking with skinny air compressors, the ones that stand up. Thinking back after wrestling the old girl out of the van, why didn't I least take the trailer, oh yeah, she looked svelte.

1 pointI have a few, lol, but many are on the back and front of tractors
