Called a deflector piston. Pretty heavy as well. weighs in at 520 grams without the Pin. Villiers used them a lot up to about 1934. then went flat top on most 2 stroke motorcycle engines when they modified the size and layout of the porting. Still used deflectors on the 79 Mk1 & 98cc Midget Mk's 2 & 3 engines which ended up in mowers etc like in my Yellow Mower challenge Atco- The Skirt ring must have been discontinued in this 269cc MkV during 1922, as the donor engine later of the same year had the same piston, but unmachined for the fitting of that ring. Thanks Ewan, It's making a pleasant change trying to save something that just under a hundred years old. Main parts of the power unit are back together now and feels nice with the movement- Working on the ignition bits now, but broke off to play with the all important starting handle. Pretty badly rusted up, but was able to dismantle into it's constituent parts. The top 3 parts in this pic, where the free turning hand grip tube was seized (frozen) onto the handle. The lower part is one of the control arms which needs attention- I had to carefully cut the old piece of tubing off, as it was solid and beyond saving. Searched for a substitute and found some stainless tubing that would just about fit. Being sold in 100mm lengths, I asked if I could have a piece 101.6mm (4 inches) and it arrived within 24hrs exactly 4 " long !!. Impressed. Went for stainless, as I reckoned the original was bright nickel plated steel. This will look ok. Initial clean up and prep required me to machine about 3 thousands of an inch off the 2 faces for the tube to fit on smoothly. Parts to finish and assemble. Even the Cotter Pin was nickel plated, but needed a new nut- Got some more machining to do before I finish the igntion bits.......tbc. -

This is a XL-102 Automatic, its a 1970 saw weighing 11 pounds and has 57cc with auto oiler and manual over ride. These were only made in 1970 and 1971 I have one from both years. I couldn't get NOS decals so I had to do the best I could. Still need to install the carb and find a appropriate spot on the shelf. Last picture is what the saw looked like before -

1 pointGot another day in the workshop. Sorted and replaced the bonnet. All that's left now are the tach-o-matics to paint and fit. Touch up some bits of paint work and order graphics. Another exhaust will be made later. May not be a stack though. That's it. Horse ready to be put back into harness.

1 pointWe got our 1973 Bolens G10 out of storage to check it over and see what parts it needs. We bought this tractor as a non-runner 18 months ago and so far we have not done anything with it. A previous owner has modified it to take a Westwood blade. It must be an early one as the serial number is very low. A quick video introduction

1 pointFrom your photos I'm struggling to see what is damaged, to pop the carb off you should just undo the 2 M6 nuts on the air filter housing and one M6 bolt under the airfilter itself. Slide the choke and fuel lever away from the engine and disconnect the breather pipe. You will now be able to remove the housing. You will see a spacer plate, take note of which way round this is fitted. Pull the carb forward and rotate the throttle on it and the connecting linkage should pop out. Some have springs that also need disconnecting. The fuel pipe should be easy to lever upwards and I always plug it with the airfilter bolt. The carbs are available from China, the last one I bought was about £8.50 delivered. The gx340 carb will also fit and work if you can't find a GX 390 one. Gx240 are also the same physical size but can starve the bigger engines of fuel as the bore and jets are smaller. The black screw is a throttle stop, under the black square is an idle screw. sorry that I threw everything out but I've offered them to others before for free and no takers. I was giving up a unit so an awful lot of kit had to go. Just looked on eBay, complete carb and gaskets are 8.58.if you're any where near Hereford I'd be happy to take a look, I used to overhaul about 5 GX Honda's a day, 6 days a week for about 10 years so have seen most problems.

Coming along nicely, Richard. I've just noticed the piston crown. I've worked on a few two strokes, but never come across a piston like that. Or with a ring at the bottom. -

Great video Joseph. The Westie come up very well; only another 50 or so garden tractors to clean ...... Just a bit concerned about the tramp who muscled in on the video. I guess you gave him a brown paper bag with a cheap bottle of whiskey to quench his thirst to make him go away? -

I am also looking forward to the Westwood D1200 as well. It was the first tractor I ever drove. Here is a much younger me on the tractor, and tractor looked a lot better then (yes we do have two of them).
