2 pointsA bit of an update for you chaps, as you know he steering is finished, so here's a photo for you. The connecting arm has been moved to behind the hubs which makes the front end look neater and a lot less danger of a tree or something bending it Yes you are seeing right, that is a fake leaf spring on the front.. I will make one out of thicker metal strips just for the Hot Rod look. The fake spring mounts will also add strength to the outer edges of the axle where the big rose joints bolt onto.. Not sure if the front hitch will be staying or going, it adds to the Wheel Horse look and could be handy for fitting weights onto to keep the front end down should needs be Those with sharp eyes may of noticed a two extra somethings in the above photo, this photo might help a bit more.. The clue is, it's the thing just in front of the rear wheel.. Yep, WN now has an exhaust system. Here's the right side mount . The left side needed a step to clear the steering rod thingy.. The step will be made to look a lot neater as it will be on show.. Two foot plate thingys chopped and welded together to make a wide one. The strange cut out needs to be filled, but I might need that hole for the pedals so it can stay for now. And the view of WN which always makes me grin like a Cheshire cat on happy pills

Now that I see this picture, I can see that I made a mistake. It's a 900 From the side view it looked like that lever was coming out of the trans case. The red lever/shaft just below the Amp meter is the hi/lo change. It moves an idler from one belt to the other to change from hi to lo range. -

Here's a hint on how to see those details. Click on the pic to get the popup pic. It in many cases is larger than the one you see in the post. Then click on the Save button. That should open that pic in another browser window. In that window, you can 'magnify' the window by holding down CTL + to zoom in. Use CTL - to zoom out. The above is for Internet Explorer. Other browsers may not work exactly like that. -

Fenders are wrong for the 800. That would make it a 900 or 1000. Since it has the hi/lo lever for the transmission, that makes it a 1000, as the 900 used the same hi/lo system as the 800. -

When it's setup properly, that lever is turned anti clockwise, and then pushed or pulled to move the idler to the correct belt. There should be two drive belts. One for hi range and one for lo range. If by 'the other lever' you mean the one with the long red handle and pointed towards the seat, that's for engaging the PTO. Here are a couple of pics of my 800. The 900 is pretty much identical to the 800 except for it having a different seat/fender pan, and larger wheels/tyres. -

Gents. Here is a very good article on the history of the Tube Frames. It definitely will help in identifying them. http://gardentractortalk.com/articles.html/_/history/bolens-tractors-the-tube-frame-series-1962-1978-r68 -

1 pointI think you got it. I'm more up on the later models, but it sure looks like a 900 to me, but I think the 1000's also had the same seat pan, so might want to try and look for numbers on the engine to determine HP. That would give an age and tell us the model number. The 900 used the 8hp S-8D and the 1000 used the 8.25 TR10-D, the manual says its a 10hp, but the engine is actually a 8.25 and marked so. Also the 900 had a 3 speed transmission with a locking Diff. and a high-low flipper switch. The 1000 had a true 6 speed tranny and a High-Low selector switch that was built into the tranny along with the locking diff.

I believe that the magnetron coil armature unit you need is BS pt no 591420. Double check by measuring the distance between the coil armature mounting screw centres. Should be approx 64mm . If this checks out you can either buy a new Briggs coil or find a good used one which should not be difficult as the same coil has been used on recent Sprint engines and there should be plenty around on engines or cheapo rotary mowers that have been scrapped for other reasons. The magnetron coil/armature units are completely self-contained so you can snip off the wires from under the flywheel and forget about the points and condenser - no need to remove them. In fact, unless you are going to replace the points actuating plunger with a blanking plug you will need to leave the points in place to retain the plunger to prevent an oil leak from the mag side main bearing. The new coil comes with a small "lucar" spade connector which is for a "kill wire" to stop the engine. This should either be taken to an existing kill switch on the throttle/governor plate or to a remote kill switch - unless, of course, your engine has neither and is fitted with the old type spring steel strip to ground out the spark plug. -
1 pointHi Simon, welcome to MOM. That is a great looking Bolens you have. Assuming the fender is made of fibreglass and it has a lever to move the belts from high to low range then I believe it is a 900. This is a picture of my 900 I am not an expert on identifying round hood Bolens so hopefully OldBuzzard or HeadExam will confirm or correct my identification. Iain
