    Project "Why Not"

Glad you approve Today has been mostly about changing the front tyres and cleaning up the wheel rims.. If you want to see how I removed the old tyres click on the link below http://myoldmachine.com/topic/1975-tipswhere-tyre-removal-and-refit/?p=21837 A cautionary tale for you all... There I was busy cleaning a wheel rim with a sanding wheel in the electric drill. I can't hear anything over the sound of the drill, so I'm in a little world of my own.. I had no idea that Nigel had been behind me for a few min's trying to get my attention.. When he finally did get my attention it made me jump and knock the wheel I was working on off the bench! The wheel hit the concrete floor with a bang and a flash! I thought the flash was the wheel hitting a bit of flint mixed in with the concrete.. Until I looked at the rim.... Hang on.. That's the sort of mark only an electrical arc could make! The flash was not flint, it was the rim cutting through my extension lead!!! Anyway, have a pic of a nice clean wheel rim... It was soon given a couple of coats of red oxide followed my some grey primer before putting the new tyres on. Here's how she looked by the end of today.. Not much left to do

    Wheel horse 42" sickle bar

Hi, I am unfortunately looking to sell my wheel horse 42" sickle bar, from what I understand it is a SMS-425. It is all free although it would benefit from a good oil up. The gearbox seems very good and it's all tight. You don't see these very often and they are quite a cool attachment in my opinion. The mule drive is missing but I have seen dimensions and plans on Redsquare to make them or they do appear on that well know auction site from time to time. It has all the original serial numbers and decals intact as you can see. I am located in Norfolk but I may be able to drop it off somewhere in my travels! I am looking for £225 or make me an offer, don't be shy I have pictured it on a Commando 7 which it seemed to fit well, I couldn't test it because I don't have the mule drive but it hooks up to the rear of the chassis, well that's how it seemed to go on I thought I'd try and picture it on a tractor to help you see what it will look like. Cub Cadet Transport Box

Well today I woke up and looked out the window, the weather was lovely and the sun was shining bright so I thought to my self, what to do today... I got the transport box out of the shed that I've just recently picked up, I've been told it's a Mayfield Tractor Transport Box. I started looking at it from all different and weird angles and sat and thought about it, then something popped into my head, I know its not done professionally nor is it an official cub cadet attachment, but it gave me something to do and in fact I'm really pleased with the outcome, I am hoping to sand it all down,.... might take a while, the weather has got to it pretty bad, but once its sanded down, I hope to paint the metal frame up in a nice gloss black, and then get some good quality grained wood and varnish that for the bottom, back and sides, I know normally these would have tin sides, but It will never be worked. I got a picture before I started and a fair few from when It's finished, but once I got stuck in I forgot to pick the camera up and take some photos of the process but here is some of it now lifting etc, hopefully within the week it may be all painted up. Yesterday just trying it out for looks! Refitting the lift arm. It's now lifting

    McGee wheel hoe

Thought I'd share this hoe with you men over there. I just restore this last week and Saturday will be its first showing to the public. This hoe was built in the 1890-1910 time frame and sold thru John Deere jobbers. It has a set of spring loaded handles that let you squeeze them together to get closer to the crop, or if released open back out. Enjoy!

Here's some I took on the first day. Not as many as Paul though. Chris and I had other things to do and think about. Many hands make light work. This had Chris and I doing some thinking. This lad was making pencils. His work bench is a sidecar on a bicycle.

Usually with an air cooled engine you can often reuse the head gasket with a smear or blue hylomar or similar. It's rare that they snap on removal of the head.

    Bolens 1556 rims

Wow, from 1972, probably 1971 actually look great, on front rim had water and sealer in it causing some light rust and surface pitting, but overall like the original owner said, always kept inside. Paint and new tires will be next

James, do you have a spark plug tester thingy, someone did add a picture of one earlier in this topic, it doesn't really tell you if the plug it's self is sparking, but it let's you know if the coil is working, it may be that the leads have come disconnected or somethings touching behind the flywheel, if you take the flywheel off, you will see the coil along with the points and a condenser, before you go messing about with the taking the head off, just in case you snap head bolts etc, plus you'll end up needing a new head gasket, I'd suggest taking the flywheel off and looking to make sure everything's still all attached as it should be, the points may need adjusting as it may be sparking at the wrong time. I've had machines that wouldn't run sometimes would run but not properly I adjusted the points and then they have been fine, The points open and close on like a lobe on the end of the shaft they spread open and then close again the gap between the points may need adjusting if these are out or need adjusting it may be sparking at the wrong time.

Valves are easy, there's quite a few how to guides on you tube, most the small engines can be done without valve spring compressors, but even if they are needed are very cheap to buy, I think my briggs one(that also does techy and others from memory)was about £2. If you're ever Hereford way outside of business hours I'll happily assist you to do it. In my experience 99% of problems with small engines can be tied down to the exhaust valve not seating properly.

Hello Gareth, I don't know if your aware, but some of those Halfords Car Spray paints are not fuel proof. I would hate for you to see your perfectly finished Fuel Tank ruined by a spillage. Will be well worth testing on a spare panel piece. If it is not resistant, then use some of their Fuel Proof Lacquer to seal it and the Decals like I did on my ATCO Tank. If you are aware, then forgive my assumption of doubt. Regards. Richard.

    Just a few new toys...

The other day I picked up a few new toys to play with, both need a little work to be how I picture them, I picked up a Cultivator that needs painting up, not sure what machine to sit it behind yet... I've freed all the nuts off and the tines all move up and down the wheel is moving up and down and also turns freely, just needs a coat of paint to match what ever machine I stick it behind. I also picked up a nice front weight box for my wheel horse, not too sure what to fill it with yet, but I am in the middle of making a bracket for it to sit on!.. I picked up lots of bits and pieces to hopefully make the stack exhaust I was going on about. A nice round small baffle box with some great pipe! Finally the thing I'm most pleased about.... Now this is different, I'm not sure what it's exact use is nor am I sure what it come from, it could be a front bucket type thing or anything, well I'm not too fussed on what it was, because I know what I'm going to try make it be ... You see these 'Transport Boxes' on the back of yard tractors etc, I've seen a few around the shows on grey fergies and the likes, but I've never seen one on this scale, so I am going to give it a go and try make this into a small transport box yet again don't know what machine to put it behind but I'm sure ill work that out at a later date, my plans with it are to attach it somehow..... It's not heavy at all really so this shouldn't be an issue, and then I'm hoping to paint the frame and stick some varnished wood into the sides and floor.

As Norm says, great job on the Tank Gareth and good progress !. Can't help with the rotten Exhaust and the Crank Case cleaning has no real 'Short Cut'. My effort on the 72 Genset project was all elbow grease with various grades of Wet or Dry with a 'T' Cut polish, but perhaps was not in as Bad-a-Condition as yours. To get the powdery white corrosion and dirt off, maybe use the green scouring pads with some Stainless Steel sink (cream) Cleaner mixed with washing up liquid ( Don't leave it on too long as it will stain the Alloy). Old Toothbrushes help to get into the awkward areas and rinse off with more soapy water.
