Not your usual type of machine .

This is not your usual type of machine that you would find in the barn , it's my 1955 Bren Gun ,deactivated of coarse . Also I have some inert pineapple hand grenades . I used to use the Bren gun 303 machine gun on a regular basis when serving in the Army along with the SLR rifle the Bren is an awesome weapon and very powerful and accurate . This particular one was used by Paratroopers in the Suez conflict as it has the short barrel .

    Tractor World Newbury

Heres a few shots from Tractor World Newbury. A little low on exhibits but its only the first year. The weather today was great for October, but yesterday was a bit rainy on and off. Overall a very enjoyable show. Darmic1 should receive a special thankyou as he over half filled the section with different exhibits, and Paul Mackellow also took a good selection of O&R machines. I would also like to thank Titch for the decals he supplied that finished my machine off.

    New addition to the workshop

I'm not getting any younger and everything I work on gets heavier.... picked this up the other week for £30 and with some recycling of an old American bike rack that was built like a tank. Ive got this A handy crane with a 4ft boom that swings inside the workshop

    Montgomery Wards 5 Hp Tiller

This is the first 4 speed with reverse model I've seen. It has some sort of clutch on the back and one belt. Most of these had two belts that were twisted and had a lever to engage a reverse by using a tension pulley to run the belts the other way. It has some surface rust on the skirt, a little overspray on it, but the tines and gear box look nearly new

Evening all progress on MadTrax's gauges continues.. The temp gauge face plate had all the cut/other marks welded up.. To stop me blowing any holes through with the welder the face plate was clamped to a lump of brass. The rear side, you can see where the weld has filled the gap without sticking to the brass plate. Once the welds were smoothed a couple of small brackets were welded on which bolt to the temp gauge backing plate.. Quick, easy and does the job a treat. It all started with a cardboard template. The steel version with 4 captive nuts and two bit's of threaded stud welded on. The threaded rod is for bolting the ignition barrel on. The gauge pods/bowls gained a flange thingy, only tacked on at this point.. To bolt the pods on I needed a M8 thread but with a bolt head smaller than 10mm, so I dug out a few allen key bolts.. Clamped one in a drill chuck then put the drill in the vice.. With the drill tuned on I fired up the grinder and totally failed to get a good photo of the allen bolt head being ground down to size! A quick test fit, me likes.. Working out how to mount the bracket that the gauge pods bolt onto has been fun! In the end I made a couple of brackets that use the same bolts as the headlamp. Other than cleaning up a few welds and adding a couple of captive nuts to stop the pod tops from opening, and adding a couple of warning lights the gauges are done. A view from the seat.. You may of noticed in the above photo that the front brakes have gained a bigger master cylinder.. An upgrade that's needed me thinks.. And to finish off, the latest MT video... Enjoy

    Mower Deck refurbishment

Great job on the Deck fabrication . Slow, but steady progress on the Deck. New bits have been arriving and I decided to make new Baffles as these are too tatty- Both now gone and ready to be Sandblasted 'n' Weldthru Primered in those areas, rest will be Etch Primed- New Baffles will be sealed to deck shell and then squirted with Waxoyl via a small access plug. Got the Anti Scalp Roller Pin out, looked pretty sad. Replacement Roller is Albino!, but will do the job and less expensive than the Black plastic Toro replacement. Also been machining up Bolts for the new Deck Wheels, as the old bolts are bigger?- And the 'Pukka' New Blades have arrived- Got them delivered for less than they appear to retail for in U.S.. Back to more fettling........

    Buma Boring Bar

Just got this on an auction site . Buma Boring Bar , 55mm to 90mm or so bore capacity . Looks to be in good order but the tool holder is missing . Motor / shafts / gears are all working fine so worth making a tool holder up for it . I think the spring loaded adjustable cutting tool approach will be the best and easiest way of going about this , as a micrometer can easily be converted to allow for rapid and accurate setting . My Wolseley WD2 will be the 1st victim as my 2nd engine was bought with a rusted bore that will benefit from a light cleaning as it were . Looking forward to going from tedious to plain boring .........

    Mower Deck refurbishment

This has been propped up against the wall in my garage since 2010 and came with the Raider/C-120. Need to get this up and running, so I dragged it out for a quick check/inspection- Not a lot of meat left on that anti scalp Roller!. All solid Shell with no weld repairs and all free moving parts. Bearings are smooth tight and have been well greased. Needs new Blades, Roller and a few bolts. Carrier Frame needs some work, so will take time out from the Traction Engine and take advantage of good late summer weather. May have to replace the Deck Wheels as well, several chunks of rubber missing!. Nearly finished the Mule Drive.

Handy machine. I like the 'Sod Buster' label in 1st Gear position . I had duel Belts on a '71' JD 624E Tiller, operated by a lever and pulley driven off the Camshaft for reverse. That machine look's way tidy. I get ones that look like this to sort out-

I bet if you left it on the car parcel shelf you wouldn't have any problems with tail gaters

    Roto-Hoe Chipper

Presumably the magnets are still good and can attract a large flat blade Screwdriver from a distance of 3/4" (a test noted in the Techy Workshop Manual). What you have ordered there should make it fire up.

    Happy Birthday slf-uk

Thanks for your birthday wishes, it is appreciated No Bolens presents from friends or family so I bought my own, a part for one of my Ride-a-matic's. Shipping was more than the part. Alan, no chance of Joseph buying me a Bolens, he is too busy claiming ownership to the best tractors in my collection. Currently he also appears to have an unhealthy attraction to my WH's I am very busy at work at the moment but I am hoping to get some tractor and forum time in a few weeks time. Iain

    Mayfield scissor cutter

I'm sure it's been done, but would check if you need to tilt the machine back more with a Wheeled Seat than when walking behind it. I know Kohlers have a 30 degree safe tilt limit for short duration to prevent starving the Oil Dipper of adequate Splash Lubrication, but I don't know about the Villiers MK10,12 or 15 on yours...I know they don't hold as much Oil. Otherwise go for it.

    Mower Deck refurbishment

This is a deck I reproduced using sheet steel and a course in welding at my local evening classes. The gearing was replaced. New blades were made from strips of steel carefully balanced. Sorry about non standard wheelhorse paint but this was 30 years ago when the Redhorse was not so cheerished.

    Mower Deck refurbishment

Assembled the refurbished Mule Drive unit today. Bit of a state initially, but cleaned up ok with Blasting and Etch Primer. Added brass tube spacer to keep the Tension Bars correctly spaced- Fitted good quality bearings- Another job done. Ready to fit-

    Mower Deck refurbishment

Hi. You think that needs work! I have a wheelhorse which has to keep 2acres cut so I can't take time out to restore. My deck is full of welds nuts and bolts plastic padding etc. Still the wheelhorse is the best of my rideons. I put myself into an evening class to learn to weld and made a deck for an even older wheelhorse the one with two blades and gearing to keep the blades from hitting. To make new blades I knocked up a 3/4" bush on a small spindle to balance the blades when ground into shape. Few years on and no problems.
