I then stripped the engine back to a point where I could respray it to the correct colour. Before painting and to ensure a good adhesion I lightly 'scotch bright' the surface and then began the process again. Here's the engine now in the correct colour. Fuel tank was next.......I do like the finish with these ProXL products! Refitted the cowling once dry and the various bits removed for painting back on the Villiers. -

Ploughing tractor build.
Joe the small engine man and 4 others reacted to moogie for a post in a topic
As Wheel Horse, Bolens and Cub Cadet's are thin on the ground over here my only other option is to build my own. So i have started collecting parts that will be required for the build. Managed to find an old generator engine Cheep! A Honda GX270 9hp, it might be a little under powered for what i want to do with it but it will do until i find something bigger. Next up i got a hold of a Suzuki Vitara axle with a 5.12:1 ratio which will be narrowed Panzer style. Roughly 12 inches will need to be cut out of each side. After a couple of hours cleaning, cutting off brackets and a coat of primer it now looks like this. Just need to build up the courage now to break out the grinder and start chopping up the axle. A couple of rims were found next. 6x16. O/A height of the rear wheels will be about 28inches. I already had the front axle that came with the chassis for the silage harvester,so that will be used with larger wheels. The axle is a heavy cast iron unit so should be plenty strong enough. Last part for now is two new 4.00x8 three rib front tyres. O/A height 16inches. Thats all the parts for now, going on Thursday night to have a look at a Bedford CF gearbox, it might be a bit of overkill but at least i wont have to make any wheel weights up to get traction. -

Bits for my next Project

If you find a picture or the M.E. Magazine, would like to see it Norm. Must have been in a copy before 1984, which was when I started reading the Mag. I'll have a go at it Ian . Have to visit a Wood Turner I know to obtain some hardwood blocks when I'm ready. Got some Lathe time in recently. PTO work is still in progress. Decided to change the Brake/Strap set up design and not employing a Spring Steel Strap like the Brake layout on some Garden Tractors. Instead, I'm opting for a pivoting Clam Shell type or external version of a Brake Shoe set up. Have obtained some 6" (152.7mm) ERW Steel Tube which will cover 2 jobs. Bit of a challenge Cutting slices off with only a manual Hacksaw - First slice in the lathe for finishing the cut end to size- Will have 4 more of these slices to cut and they will used to make Truck Wheels, as original Cast Iron ones are rare and expensive. The steel ring is perfect in dimension to accommodate the 3/16" thick Friction Lining and the PTO diameter- The bearing surfaces of the PTO are having their faces skimmed and have been 'Spot Faced' where the Bolts pass through- Phosphor Bronze Bearing Insert finished to outer diameter being 'Parted Off' from the Cored Billet- Used a 1.1/2" diameter Live Centre in the Tailstock to support the work. 'Parted Off' and a light fit in the Bearing so it can be Soldered (200c) in- Internal bore will be finished last before mounting back onto the Carrier Plate. They were retained by 1/4" Iron Rivets originally and the stress of 'Closing' the rivets originally had cracked the Bearing flange edge at it's thinnest point. I will use specially made Countersunk Screws in reamed holes. Have the other bearing to remove next and repeat . -

Wheel Horse Sickle Bar.

A little progress with the painting today. First top coat applied. Was going to paint it MF red, but as I'd a full tin of IH red, that's what's going on. One of the small idler pulleys got a really good coat of paint. Can you tell which one? Slipped out of my fingers and dropped in the full can of paint. The other side of the cutter bar is yet to do. Maybe tomorrow, unless I'm herding cattle. Below is part of the mounting frame that Jonathan kindly cleaned up for me. -
2 pointsThe Insomnia is back! So I thought i'd show you what I have done with the 1st of my days off. I haven't been happy with the flat colour supplied by the paint shop, so took some bits from the 2nd machine along and trawled through their colour chips until we found what we think is the perfect colour match to the original metallic finish. Its odd how when these machines were made they were able to mix a metallic paint which had a gloss finish to it, yet today it has to be a 2 stage, base colour and clear coat process! The bits were given several light coats of the base and left for around 2 hours to dry. I then activated the 2K clear and sprayed light coats over the base colour. .

1 pointHi all, Picked up a plough today, it was all ceased up and a bit rusty albeit only surface rust.. Yep, a brinly plough I'm over the moon. After a few hours on it, lots of heat and a tub of copper grease later it ended up like this: I'm very happy with how it has come up and how everything is so free now. Hopefully I'll be able to take it to a local ploughing match soon and give it a try.. Oh and to top it off I got a set of John deere rear wheel weights for my 110 Tom

My new plough
Joe the small engine man reacted to HeadExam for a post in a topic
Way to beat the bushes Tom. Contrary to what many people think these ploughs were not meant to be able to turn sodded soil that has been a yard or lawn without scrapping off the grass, but rather to plough a patch that has been prepped to plough. You could plough heavily sodded soil with this plow, but you would need a fairly large or heavy tractor such as a Gutbrod 1032 or bigger. All that said, it would be advantageous (and fun) to find a small patch to practice plowing techniques and plough settings. Again, great find. -
