    DIGGER DAY

When I was working in the Mendip Mower Co., in 1962 we had a contract to do all Wiltshire County Council's mowers and tractors. I reckon Norman Currel and I did hundreds of those Ransomes Gang mowers. We stripped, cleaned, sharpened and repainted them, we replaced the cylinder blades where necessary. Gear oil was SAE 140 we nearly had to put it in with a spoon it was so cold! They used them in threes, some had steel wheels, some had pneumatic tyres. We also had a number of big Dennis Mowers and 3 Trusty Steeds.

In spite of the dire warnings of gales and rain I set off with car and trailer to Puckington, expecting to be towed through the gate. But no problem, the ground was hard ad dry! Set up tent next to Charlie Moore and Breeze and I got our heads down. Windy and drizzle on Saturday but all tents survived....

Anybody Know what these are off

Bought these years ago from a sale and they've been holding a sheet down on my BBQ, as I'm doing a bit of ploughing i need some weight on the rear wheels of my wheelhorse and thought i might fit them. They are 28 lbs each, don't know if that will be enough but it must help

Afternoon all, for one reason and another progress as been a bit slow again but as long as something is happening then the build is going in the right direction.. The frame now has a removable member to aid getting the engine out when needs be. A close up of the joins that only need a little tidying up. The plan was to get MadTrax off the bench so I could have a seat to feel how she felt at ground level, the pull the engine out so the frame could be fully welded in the places the engine wouldn't let me reach... Well that was the plan.. Off the bench she came.. As you can see from the above photo's there is something missing from the front end to balance it out looks wise. Nigel and I had been wondering what could be done to even it out until I dug out the big army type spot lamp, gave it a very quick coat of black and hung it off the front with a bit of welding wire... Yep, just the ticket and about the right size compared to the fuel tank This bracket used to hold the front bodywork/bull bar but not only was it not needed it also looked ugly! So it was cut out and replaced by some more steel tube.. That looks better The front two tubes were left open from the factory which didn't look right, so I extended them down into a point.. Much better.. The welds will be ground down when MadTrax goes back up on the bench. The big lamp was mounted using a bracket at the top which bolts onto the head stock. And a smaller one at the bottom which will look better with a little trimming to shape. And that chaps brings this build thread up to date again other than I like the look from this angle sooo much I'm going to put the pic up again

Following on from the success of the display at Malvern, a group of us thought it would be nice to finish the 80th anniversary year of the MG tractor with a display at the Newbury Show. I have entered a group stand as the Ransomes owners club which will provide us with an indoor display area and an outdoor area from which arena mobile displays can be made drive around etc. I am hoping to take a number of machines hopefully including the ultra rare complete skimming tractor. I would appreciate it if other owners thinking about going would indicate which machines they will be taking so that we can again cover the range. The MEARL archives will be there again as will Neil Jarrett , anyone needing spares should contact Neil and save on carriage particularly for larger parts. We will be taking our camper plus trailer so let's hope the weather is kind. I look forward to seeing you there.

Looks like I missed out on all the excitement last night. That looks like good HT20 and worth saving. If Andrew's having the tractor and Chris the tiller, then the wheel weights must be mine Iain

They made many of those round back tillers, at least 4 different model numbers. The early round backs were the 18608 and were a 22" wide tiller designed for models 600-180-01 through -03 and models 600-181-01 through -04. This model could use the later tiller extension kit, but I don't think it would be recommended on any of the Bolens 600's. Bolens also offered 22" tiller with the model number 18609 and was designed for the Bolens model 800 and new Bolens model 900. This was also a good tiller for the later Bolens model 750 and was available with a extension kit. Next Bolens offered a model 18610 round back tiller with optional extension kit for the Bolens model 1000, this tiller could be used on the early tractors, but needed a different driveshaft for use on the Bolens 600. When the 1050 arrived Bolens again offered an upgraded version of the round back tiller for the large tube frames coming on the scene. Most of the previous tiller models had variants in hook ups and drive shafts, but they also beefed these tillers up over time. In 1969 the 25" model 18614 "flat-backed" tiller was introduced. These were specifically designed for the larger 12 hp medium tube frames. The round back tillers were not recommended for use on later 12 hp and larger machines. Later flat back tillers include the model 18616 and 18618, for the newer 14 and 16 hp tube frames. I don't think there was a lot of difference in the 18614 and the 18616 except the drive shaft, but the the 18618 tiller was a 33" wide tiller made for the later 14 and 16 hp tractors and was black in color. Many dealers had round back tillers in stock and sold them with 12 and even 15 hp tractors until stocks were depleted, not always to cheat someone, but as a lower price point on a tiller. If any of this is incorrect, or incomplete, I think we would all welcome any corrections or additions.

    Bolens Ploughing

I was wondering if it would be or not. My friend uses a GPS it to return to good fishing spots and my wife's car has one as standard equipment. I wont use them, they aren't that accurate or useful to me. I use Rand MacNally and/or google earth/maps.

Matt, that would be a good one to get. The round hood tiller has an extension on it as well adding to its desirability. I got my 1050 for £375 I think. Keep us in the loop.

I had a 1050 which was in the trade stands from there last year. Was not sold & ended up on ebay It came with a deck & tiller but in worse condition that this one. I gave £400 to one of our traveling friends for it. That is a good example though

A few photo's wot I tuk. Bit late I know, but I've been busy. The Saturday line up. And from the other direction. Who said size matters. Nice fit. There's something about industrial trucks. Ian's GT14 ready for doing a bit of ploughing Ransome with trailed plough. Andrew trying the Trojan for size. I should have got a photo of the rear view. Contrary to popular belief, Nigel can make coffee. That's all folks.

I wasn't trying to claim it was new... My Lawnflite uses the same system to get 7 speeds... I was merely trying to squeeze another gadget - and gear lever onto Bendy. I've a thing about knobs and levers, also looking forward to printing some 12 speed stickers...

I have just got home after a very long journey back. Well worth the trip and I really enjoyed the day. it was great to meet everyone from the forum especially people I have not met befor; Norm, Andrew, Nigel, Ian and Paul. I would like to echo what others have said by thanking The Showman for his fantastic work organising our section of the event. Also thanks to Ian for letting me drive his GT14 around the arena, and to Nigel, Chris and The showman for letting my lad Joseph and I drive machines in the working area. Iain

I really enjoyed it today and thanks to Nigel for letting me drive the blue Trojan; a little gem of a tractor for someone with a smaller body mass. Also many thanks to Chris for setting up and organising another splendid day. Great to meet up with everyone and good to meet up with Iain after two years emailing each other. Also thanks to Chris for allowing me to drive his Bolens 1886. A fantastic machine as suspected. I got a year to start planning a mini Bolens invasion at RPT !

I've recently had my Allan engine running again after nearly two years in pieces. If you don't wish to watch the preparations the start up is at 7 minutes.
