6 pointsMy Granddad created a video for me using a lot of the clips and pictures we have on this tractor. Some of this you will have seen before and if you get bored the really new stuff starts at about 5mins. If you have a YouTube/Google account and you like what you see, please hit the like button and subscribe. We are working on a video about one of the other tractors but dad is slower at the editing than Granddad

AN OLD RESTORATION
pmackellow and one other reacted to Alan for a post in a topic
Restored this BMB PRESIDENT about 40 years ago. Member Paul on MoM who has one was interested in seeing photo's so I dug out my old prints and did a few quick copy's. Towed it back to friend John's place with either a David Brown or the recently departed B450 along with a trailer load of bits and pieces. The people in blue weren't too fussy in those days. Kept to the back roads anyway. Not too much wrong apart from paint. Didn't take long to get it running and have a play. Then dismantled, cleaned and repainted. Don't remember the make of paint but all brushed. No facility for spraying. Whatever it was was good quality, same with the brushes. Think I applied 3 top coats to get a good deep finish. All the lettering was done with water slide transfers. 1/8" and 1/4" high letters applied individually. The other parts were cut from sheet. Cannot remember though how I did the PRESIDENT. Might have been cut out letters etc or just painted. No Titch or Mark in those days. Drove it to a few early local shows and did a garden leveling job with a scraper blade mounted on the rear hydraulic arms. Worked well. After a period of standing idle it was sold. Not seen since. The last photo shows me in my streamlined form and before my hair faded. -

Hako D522 diesel tractor
harryt reacted to expeatfarmer for a post in a topic
The two stroke Diesel refers to the induction process, the oil is a dry sump system not connected to the fuel. Diesel acts as a lubricant on it's own as per Sachs and Drayton/Stihl two stroke diesels. If it is a 600cc, it should have a power equivalent to a 1200cc 4 stroke as the engine will fire once every revolution instead of every second. -

had a look and seems that the cap closets to the seat is diesel, the one in front engine oil/two stroke oil and the small one on the front is hydraulics -

Model 142301 and spec 019701 is the engine fitted to a 1962 Bolens 600, model 181-01 or 181-02. When fitted to the tractor it would have been electric start, spec 019801 was the manual start version. Hopefully confirming engine age will help you with parts. Iain -

1 pointThanks for that Alan. Great pictures. Shame you don't know where it is. Like people are saying, I expect you can find it through the dvla. On the plus side I can't comment on you and the hair Paul

Yes, the valve clearances are "adjustable" - if too tight a small amount may be ground off the end of the valve stem to achieve the book clearance. This is done after any valve refacing, seat cutting and lapping etc. Loss of spark may well be down to a faulty coil or condenser, but first check the contact breaker points gap and and also that the breaker plunger is not sticking in the block when warmed up. If that happens the points are held open until things cool down. I've found an old micro fiche covering engines 142300 - 142457 and the relevant parts are shown as- Coil 296834, condenser 29861, contact breaker set 29667, breaker plunger 65704 If you are not concerned about "originality" and the coil is good, the points and condenser can be replaced with a solid state trigger module such as a Meco or a Nova. If the coil is kaput and unavailable and the engine has electric start , there is a "work around" using an external car type coil as used on some Kohlers. -

HAKO! i'd love me one of those one day but them cost quite a lot over here i dont think it needs any aditional two stroke oil since its a diesel, and being JLO id guess its aircooled. as for starting it try wetting a rag with petrol and holding it over the airfilter, should start on that the third tank might be engine oil, could be dry sump -
1 pointGood to see something different Harry. I am sure Chris will be able to cast his mechanical eye over it!

I thought a few more detailed pics would be a good idea. Someone did a top rate job on this exhaust! I've cleaned the mating surfaces and made new gaskets. The old gaskets were brittle and just plain old. I can't wait to get this on the water, I acquired it just a few days ago. -

1 pointThe VHGMC horticultural ploughing rules state a minimum depth of 12cm. Just under 5". Not that I'll be taking part in any of their matches. My tractor and plough don't qualify. I put the tractor up on the lift and with the plough hanging over the end, board lying along the lift and plough down, the above depth was ascertained. Now the actuator that does the up and down business, has no in between position. It's either up or down. After much trial and error, the tool bar has been modified. The tongue that goes into the slot hitch has been raised so the tool bar is lower. It was also extended and now has two holes for the slot hitch pin. First hole is in the same place and the second an inch back. This has given me two positions. The first hole gives just over 12cm and the second just over 13cm. That'll do for now and the test will be the Hethersgill Vintage Club ploughing match next month.
